What is the Stuck Key and Chatter Tester?
If your keyboard is typing letters twice, producing random characters unprompted, or if your computer behaves as though a key is permanently held down — this tool will pinpoint exactly which switch is failing.
The tool listens for two specific hardware failures:
- Key chatter — mechanical switches that bounce internally, firing multiple signals from a single physical press.
- Stuck keys — switches that send a “key down” signal but fail to send “key up” when you release them.
How to Diagnose Your Keyboard
Testing for chatter: Type a sentence at your normal pace. If you see yellow warning indicators in the “Detected Key Chatter” section, the switch for that specific key is bouncing. The most commonly affected keys are those pressed most frequently — Space, E, and Enter.
Testing for stuck keys:
If your computer is behaving strangely — files keep multi-selecting, the cursor moves on its own, or text highlights automatically — load this page and look at the “Stuck Down” display. If it shows a key like ShiftLeft or ControlLeft without you touching anything, that switch is physically jammed.
Use Cases
Double typing diagnosis — if you’re getting doubled letters while typing (“hhe” instead of “he”) and you’ve ruled out autocorrect, this tool confirms whether it’s a hardware chatter problem or something else.
Post-spill assessment — after liquid gets into a keyboard, some switches start misfiring. Use the chatter test to identify which keys are affected before deciding whether to repair or replace.
Old or worn keyboard check — mechanical switches rated for 50–100 million actuations can start bouncing as they wear. This test shows whether your aging keyboard has reached that point.
Gaming interference — chattering on WASD or Space in a game can cause unintended movement or jumps. Identify the offending key here before it affects competitive performance.
Fixing Key Chatter
If a specific key is confirmed to be chattering:
- Compressed air — blow directly into the switch housing with compressed air to dislodge dust or debris causing the bounce.
- Debounce settings — some keyboards allow adjusting debounce time in their driver software (e.g., Corsair iCUE, Razer Synapse, or QMK/VIA). Increasing this value from 5ms to 10–15ms can eliminate the problem.
- Isopropyl alcohol — remove the keycap, apply a small amount of 99% isopropyl alcohol to the switch, and press it rapidly to clean the contacts. Allow it to dry fully before use.
- Switch replacement — on a hot-swap keyboard, swapping the faulty switch is the most permanent fix and takes about a minute per key.
