What is the Online Camera Test?
The Online Camera Test lets you instantly check whether your webcam or laptop camera is working correctly. It displays a live video feed, automatically detects the stream’s resolution and frame rate, and alerts you to common problems like a blocked lens or a dark room.
Everything runs directly in your browser using the browser’s native MediaDevices API. No video is ever recorded or sent anywhere.
How to Test Your Camera
- Start the test — click the “Start Test” button.
- Grant permission — your browser will ask to access your camera. Click “Allow”.
- Check the feed — you should see your live video. Confirm the image is clear and well-lit.
- Review details — check the overlay for your camera’s resolution (width × height) and current frame rate.
Use Cases
Before video calls — confirm your webcam is functional and framed correctly before a job interview, client meeting, or online class. Catching a dark room or a misaligned camera beforehand makes a much better impression.
Troubleshooting a black screen — if your video appears blank in Zoom or Teams, use this tool to isolate whether the issue is with your hardware or with the video call software.
Testing a new webcam — when you first plug in an external USB webcam, check here to confirm it’s recognized and streaming before configuring it in your main video software.
Low-light diagnosis — the tool analyzes the video feed and warns you if the image is too dark, which helps you decide whether to adjust your lighting before a call.
Why Use This Tool
Diagnosing a webcam problem normally means going into your operating system settings or opening a separate application. This tool cuts that down to a single browser tab — grant camera permission, and you immediately see whether everything is working, along with the technical details about your stream.
Troubleshooting
If the video feed doesn’t appear:
- Make sure you clicked “Allow” when prompted for camera access.
- Check that another application — like Zoom, OBS, or Skype — isn’t currently using the camera.
- Open any physical privacy shutters on the lens.
- In Windows, go to Settings > Privacy > Camera and confirm that browser access is enabled.
- Try a different browser if the issue persists.
