What is the Online Latency Indicator?
The Latency Indicator measures two distinct types of delay:
- Network latency (ping) — the time in milliseconds for a data packet to travel from your browser to a server and back.
- Human reaction time — how long it takes your brain to process a visual cue and physically click your mouse.
Both are measured in milliseconds using browser-native APIs, so no software installation is needed.
How to Test Network Latency
Click the “Test Network Ping” button. The tool sends a small request to an edge server and times the round trip. Lower values mean a faster, more responsive connection. Run the test several times and note any inconsistency between readings — large variation (jitter) can be just as problematic as high average ping.
How to Test Reaction Time
- Click the large colored box to start.
- The box turns red — wait and do not click yet.
- After a random 2–5 second delay, the box turns green.
- Click it the instant it turns green.
- Your reaction time displays in milliseconds.
Try at least five runs and average the results for a reliable baseline.
Use Cases
Gaming troubleshooting — high ping causes lag in first-person shooters, real-time strategy games, and competitive multiplayer. Use the network test to confirm whether your connection is the bottleneck before blaming your hardware.
Video call quality — a ping above 100ms on a video call leads to audio delays and choppy video. Test your latency before an important meeting to decide whether to switch from Wi-Fi to a wired connection.
Reflex benchmarking — athletes, competitive gamers, and researchers use reaction time tests to establish a personal baseline and track changes over time or across different conditions.
Hardware testing — your reaction time score in this test can be affected by monitor response time and mouse input lag, making it a rough indicator of total system input delay.
